The Philosopher’s Club

A meeting of the minds

Looking Back

As you think back on your time in Philosopher’s Club, what questions do you still wonder about? Use this entry to write about any big questions you have. Please include any thoughts you have to answer your question.
Here’s a question that still puzzles me: Is it okay to take away a person’s rights to protect the rights of others? Can you put someone in jail because you think he might do something bad for our country even if you can’t prove he has broken any laws?

After the Election

Here is a question that every politician thinks about:
Should a leader do what the voters want or should he make decisions based on what he thinks is right, no matter how the voters feel?

Adding new thunks

Welcome Philosophers! I hope you’ve been thinking of your own questions for the group. Add them to the comments on this post and I’ll organize them for our discussion. Remember think deeply!

A Trip to The Library of Virginia

Marietta McCarty and the Philosophers Club

The Philosophers Club had a chance to hear a real philosopher discuss her ideas. Marietta McCarty, author of Little Big Minds, came to The Library of Virginia to introduce her new book, How Philosophy Can Save Your Life: 10 Ideas That Matter Most. Some of the ideas she included were Simplicity, Communication, Individuality, Belonging Possibility and Joy.

If you had to choose ideas that are important for a good life, what would they be? Choose at least 2 ideas. Write the word and explain what you mean. If possible, give us an example of how it helps you have a good life.

Thunk #3

If you could take a pill that would make you always happy, would you? Why or why not?

Thunk #2

Is there more future or past? Why?

Thunk #1

Does your pet love you the way you love it? Explain your answer.

Welcome Philosophers!

This is our first visit to the Philosopher’s Club blog for the 2009-2010 school year. I hope you have a chance to read what previous philosophers have written. For your first experience on theĀ  blog, you will be choosing a “thunk” to which you will respond. Remember to first think deeply before you make your choice and respond in print.
